Throughout the semester we made soap several times. Along with the soap we'd also make bath bombs. We'd make soap and sell it at different events such as the Makers Fair, street fair on Adams Avenue, and at different school events.
Soap
Our soap is 100% natural. We use Olive oil, Shea butter, Coconut oil, pigment, fragrance and lye.
We have to boil all of our oils - Olive Oil, Shea Butter, and Coconut Oil.
At the same time you have to make you Lye so that both of them can cool down.
When both of them are about 105 degrees fahrenheit you want to mixe you mixtures together.
Then, you add your pigments and fragrance.
When it thickens pour it into the mold.
At the end, you have to PH test your soap to make sure it is safe to use.
How Does Soap Work?
Soap is made up of hydrophobic and hydrophilic molecules. Hydrophobic ends of soap molecules all attach to the oil and the hydrophilic ends attach to the water. This causes a drop of oil to form ㅡ these drops of oil are suspended in the water. This is how soap cleans your hands, it causes drops of grease and dirt to be pulled off your hands and suspended in water.
Bath Bombs
Making bath bombs was very difficult. We had to pack them very tightly otherwise they'd just fall apart. And many times it didn't have enough fizzing so we had to play around with the variables. And the weather also has a huge impact on the final product.
Our Bath Bombs are also 100& Natural. They are made from baking soda, citric acid, sea salt, witch hazel or water, fragrance, and food coloring
